WHY CO2 CANNABIS EXTRACTION?
HOW IT WORKS
MedWest uses supercritical CO2 extraction to extract essential THC oils organically to produce well balanced cannabis infused products. A method used by the finest companies in the world, CO2 extraction or Supercritical Fluid Extraction (SFE,) is known for being the most effective way to extract beneficial essences from plant matter. This method is not only used for cannabis concentrates, but is also used to create pure essential oils and to strip out or separate different elements of botanicals. Popular products manufactured using this method are: herbal essential oils, hops for beer, high value pharmaceutical precursors and decaffeinated coffee.
Supercritical CO2’s high diffusion rates allow it to penetrate solids faster than a liquid solvent. The benefit of using Carbon Dioxide as an extraction solvent is its place in nature. Carbon Dioxide is a natural product which leaves behind no residues. CO2’s purity is its biggest advantage over all other solvents used for plant extraction. Currently, a popular extraction solvent is butane which can potentially leave heavy metals behind in your finished product.
Supercritical fluid extraction is a method of using high pressure to force a solvent through plant matter. In our case, the solvent we use is carbon dioxide. When the solvent is pushed through the plant matter at such a high pressure, it can separate the matter precisely which allows us to isolate only the purest essence of our botanicals- in this case, cannabis. The result is pure, transparent, amber cannabis oil.
WHY NOT BUTANE?
Butane extracted hash oil (BHO) is high in THC but nearly devoid of CBD resulting in a bi-phasic effect that can increase anxiety at higher doses – not as effective for medical purposes. Butane extracted oils also can potentially leave heavy metals behind in your finished product. The presence of both THC and CBDs found in well balanced CO2 extracted oil allows the patient to consume a higher dose of THC for pain relief without experiencing the anxiety that can be associated with oil extracted with butane. Conversely, butane hash oil (BHO) typically has a higher level of THC but nominal CBDs to counteract the anxiety and “head high”. California has banned the use of butane extraction under Health and Safety Code Section 11379.6(a) the fine for violating this is a minimum $50,000 and 3-7 year prison sentence. Not exactly a trip to the country club.

“It's better than taking pain medication or narcotics. After getting out of the hospital, I've had trouble sleeping, so I went to Evergreen Apothecary and I bought some CannaTabs. I had a great night's sleep that I have not had in months with CannaTabs. The next day I woke up refreshed to start my day."
